Madras cucumber/ Thouthe curry

I have always known this vegetable as Thouthe (thats what we call it in south karnataka) untill few days back when I saw this vegetable in a chinese market. I had completely forgotten about the existence of this vegetable and the yummy curry thats prepared with it. With a strong desire to enjoy that curry again and with absolutely no clue on how to go about preparing it, I bought this vegetable. After 2 weeks of lying in my fridge and after twice taking the recipe from mom, I finally prepared this curry yesterday. Though it didnt taste exactly the way mom makes it but it was somewhat close.

What you need -
Madras cucumber/ Thouthe - 1 small
Toor Dal - 1/4 cup
Tamarind juice - 1tspn
Turmeric - 1/4 tspn
Jaggery - 1/4 tspn
Oil
Salt as per taste

For Masala
Fresh Coconut - 2 tblspn
Coriander seeds - 1/2 tspn
Jeera - 1/4 tspn
Fenugreek seeds -  5-6
Black pepper - 4-5
Dry red chilli - 2-3
Curry Leaves - 3-4
Channa dal - 1/4 tspn
Udad dal - 1/4 tspn

For tempering
Mustard seeds - 1/2 tspn
Curry leaves - 2-3
Dry red chilli - 1

Firstly, roast all the masala ingredients seperately and then grind them together with little water to a smooth paste.

Next, pressure cook dal and thouthe for 1 whistle along with tamarind, turmeric, jaggery and salt.

Now, add the above masala paste to the cooked dal. Mix well. Add around 1 cup of water and let it cook covered for 3 - 4mins.

Meanwhile prepare tadka using the tadka ingredients. Pour it over the curry and immediately cover it.

Serve hot with steamed rice.
